Eggs and Bird Flu, Part 2

2/5/2025

Surviving the trump administration, A Daily Thread. Episode 14: Eggs and Bird Flu: Part 2.

It’s been 2 weeks since I started posting these daily-reflections-in-the-midst-of-a-fascist-takeover; 17 days since the takeover itself. The price of eggs has risen more than 25% at my local grocery store in that time – and I know it’s because farmers have been forced to slaughter thousands of chickens due to the bird flu.

Thinking about chicken slaughter is not helpful; nor is thinking about bird flu; nor is thinking about the associated administrative misinformation / info suppression. So here’s a story.

A few months ago, I had some routine blood tests done and found that I was low in inwfntlgin, which my doctor translated as NEED MORE PROTEIN. I had been a non-official mostly-vegetarian for a while, because thinking about cute animals and then eating them makes me sad.

So I started with fish, because I don’t have an emotional attachment to fish they way I do to sweet chickens or gentle cows or cute piggies. I knew that tuna is high in mercury so I couldn’t eat that too often. And I subsequently learned that basically every other kind of fish is ALSO high in mercury… except cod (which is gross), tilapia (which is not available in my frozen section) and salmon (which is like $100/pound).

BUT WAIT! I read on the internet that you can get CANNED salmon! It took some hunting, but I found it near the tuna, in large, oddly-shaped cans that were like $4 each but had three servings inside, so a much better deal than the frozen variety.

I bought two cans… and subsequently suffered through some of the oiliest, fishiest, most disgusting protein-packed meals I have ever endured. OK, so canned salmon is out.

But a-ha! Why EGGS had not occurred to me sooner, I don’t know, but sometime around the end of December, I gleefully added them to my rotation. I thankfully don’t have cholesterol issues, so eggs are a cheap and easy way for me to get animal protein without too much of the associated sadness around thinking about what I’m eating.

…and then the sweet chickens got bird flu and are being mass slaughtered, and eggs are now basically as expensive as frozen salmon. Perfect.
