Surviving the trump administration, A Daily Thread. Episode 25: COVID Vaccine Mandates Do Not Exist

All right, we’re going to do a 3-part series of porch-skeleton photos (are you excited for tomorrow’s? I know I am). For today, please enjoy this mermaid skeleton who is celebrating Valentine’s Day and has nothing to do with today’s topic.

Actually – I can reach for a metaphor here. We can all agree that mermaids don’t actually exist, right? Well, much like that fairytale, COVID vaccine mandates in United States public school districts also don’t exist. AND YET, 3 days ago, president trump signed an executive order to withhold federal funding from any schools that mandate the COVID vaccine.

I wonder if the people who are cheering for this move are excited about it because they believe COVID vaccine mandates in public schools actually DO exist? Are they parents, these relieved and celebratory Americans? Were they preparing to attend protests against these nasty non-existent government mandates? Or call their children’s schools to complain about the imaginary shackles being placed on their little darlings?

Or, are they people WITHOUT school-aged children, who had previously been enraged ON OTHER PARENTS’ BEHALF (behalves?) at this fanciful governmental overreach? HOW DARE the federal government force other people’s children to take a life-saving vaccine to help end our multi-year battle against a worldwide pandemic?!

Or did they believe COVID didn’t exist? I don’t even know where to start with that.

ANYWAY, I personally believe that a COVID vaccine mandate for public school attendance would be a good thing. They currently exist for diseases like measles, polio, and diphtheria – diseases which are largely in our collective rear-view mirror BECAUSE of these vaccine mandates. HOWEVER, since there are currently ZERO public schools with a COVID vaccine mandate, I’m a little offended that the trump administration feels the need to do this dog-and-pony-show executive order business, and baffled that anyone in the country is cheering about it.

There are lots of balls we should probably (definitely) be keeping our eyes on as we hurtle towards fascism together, but this is not one of them. (Oops, sorry to be part of the distraction. DAMN, it’s easy to get reeled in.)
