Rainbows only happen when it rains.

Surviving the trump administration, A Daily Thread. Episode 9: Rainbows only happen when it rains.

During the pandemic, I got minorly obsessed with tarot cards. I collected a whole bunch of decks and started making daily videos for TikTok about the cards I would pull. Viewers started requesting readings, so I would pull cards for them too. Whether you believe in tarot as a mystical connection between realms, or a whimsical way to connect art and playfulness to mindful decision making, there is value in the process.

Bearing in mind that joy is a necessary part of resistance to fascism, I wanted to write a playful post today. So I drew some tarot cards!

The first card that appeared was the 5 of Cups, affectionately labeled in this tarot deck as Disappointment. I chuckled a little, and thought – well, I’m not sure how I’ll write a joyful post about Disappointment; let me draw another card!

The next card I drew was the 10 of Swords, AKA Despair.

I laughed out loud. How can I write a joyful post about Disappointment and Despair?! I drew a third card.

The King of Cups Reversed is what showed up. Control is the theme of this one.

Well, the cards seem to be taunting me here… but I will not be deterred! Here is my playful take on today’s reading: we can focus on Disappointment; we can wallow in Despair; or we can turn our relationship to Control on its head, turn our faces toward the sky, and look for the rainbow!

Epilogue: it’s raining heavily at my house right now, and I just watched a dad holding his small son’s hand as his son jumped and stomped and splashed through some amazing puddles. How’s THAT for a reminder of joy in the midst of rain?
