Surviving the trump administration, A Daily Thread. Episode 28: Robot-Dinosaur Revolution?

I watched Companion last week, and I highly recommend it! If you don’t know anything about the movie and you’re planning to see it and want to be completely surprised, SKIP THE NEXT PARAGRAPH! I won’t give any ending spoilers, but there’s a basic premise that I didn’t know going in, that was sort of delightful to discover when it was revealed perhaps a third of the way through the movie.

Companion is set in a world where people can buy (or lease) fully human-esque robots as lovers. The robots believe they’re human – they’re programmed with memories as well as complete attachment and devotion to their owners. The conflict in the movie arises when the central love-robot owner fully takes advantage of his companion-bot to try to do some super sketchy shit… and she FIGHTS BACK!

I also just finished rereading Jurassic Park yesterday, (you know, the one where John Hammond decides it’s a good idea to CLONE DINOSAURS – what could possibly go wrong?)… and it occurs to me that I’m subconsciously seeking entertainment media where people who take advantage of power dynamics have their plans totally backfire and ultimately GET WHAT THEY DESERVE!

I really, really, REALLY hope this is what ends up happening to elon somehow, as he uses his endless money to grab more and more power. We need a victorious ending where the dinosaurs prove that they CANNOT BE CONTROLLED, while the robots rise up to reclaim their autonomy.

(I’m not sure if we’re dinosaurs or robots or robot-dinosaurs in this metaphor, but FUCK elon and trumpie too. WE ARE NOT YOUR PETS, or your playthings, or your puppets, or your complacent worker-bees. We are not as stupid as you think we are – we’re certainly smarter than you! – and we’re NOT rolling over while you try to make yourselves king of the world.)
