Transformation and the Year of the Snake

Surviving the trump administration, A Daily Thread. Episode 7: Transformation and the Year of the Snake
Today marks the beginning of the Year of the Snake in Chinese astrology, and one of the themes I keep reading about is letting go of what no longer serves us, like the snake sheds its skin.
When we’re mired in old patterns, we have no space to envision and create new futures. But when we let go of the beliefs and behaviors that have run their course, transformation can begin!
Here are some things I no longer need: self-doubt. Conforming to societal expectations. Biting my tongue out of fear of judgment. Self-judgment. Actually, judgment in general! Comparison in general! Either/or thinking. Resistance to change. Fear of failure. Resentment! Non-solution-based, AKA “doomsday,” AKA “woe is me” thinking. Anxiety in general! Seriously, I’m done with it!!
I hope this is obvious, but it’s important that all this letting go NOT include things like “letting go of giving a shit about ending American fascio-capitalism and white supremacy,” or “letting go of increasing my self-awareness,” or “letting go of trying to behave like a compassionate human being.” You know. We’re trying to evolve here, not descend into the toxic hate sewer that the administration is presenting to us.
The snake teaches us that growth and change are inevitable, and we have to release what we no longer need in order to make room for new growth. Letting go of habits, beliefs, or behaviors that are familiar might be uncomfortable, but this is the choice we have to make if we want to be part of crafting the personal and collective life we believe in.
