Eggs and Bird Flu

Surviving the trump administration: A Daily Thread. Episode 1: Eggs and Bird Flu

This is the price for 18 eggs at our Fred Meyer right now. I’m not even angry about it, really - ok, that’s a lie - but angry is currently taking a backseat to scared. I’m scared of what it will mean for us if bird flu starts spreading human to human. I’m scared we won’t get accurate information about it right away. I’m scared the dictatorship we have just elected will underplay the severity and not take proper steps to try to keep us safe.

All that would be enough to worry about, except they’re also waging a war on trans people and immigrants, while also intensifying our war against the environment. And that’s just the beginning of the list of human rights they’re rolling back and injustices they’re enacting.

Maybe it no longer matters that I don’t understand why so many people seem to think that any of this is ok. I’m quite certain it doesn’t matter that I don’t personally know what to do about any of it.

I do know - because activists have been teaching us for much longer than I’ve been aware of all of this - that the harmful systems want to scare and exhaust us into submission and silence. They want us - if we’re privileged enough to be sidestepping the worst of the oppression - to numb out and turn the other way and tell ourselves that we have no other choice.

So we have to speak up. We have to fight back, even if it’s only in small ways. We have to keep returning to joy and hope and action. We have to find our communities and remember that we’re never alone.

May this be the rock bottom that we needed in order to finally do some deep collective healing. And may the hopeful majority of us make it to the other side, stronger together.
