Surviving the trump administration, A Daily Thread. Episode 2: Disconnect to Reconnect
I’ve been obsessively walking 10,000 steps a day since early in the pandemic - it has become something I can mark off my list even on days when nothing else seems to go right - and thereby maintain some semblance of control in a world that is unpredictable at best.
There’s nothing wrong with this little routine I’ve developed. I think we need routines - to keep ourselves on track with small or larger goals, or to give ourselves reminders of purpose on the days that are more emotionally challenging.
AND, I think it’s important to notice when our habits or routines have stopped serving us. For example, I also have a habit of WORRYING ABOUT SHIT I CAN’T CONTROL! It’s very easy, perhaps especially in the current political climate, to latch onto worry to pass the time, or because it’s familiar, or because it feels unavoidable.
There’s nothing “wrong” with this, either. You’re not “bad” if you do it too. But here’s a secret that Trump and Elon and all the other fuckheads taking up our feeds don’t want us to know: when we fill our heads with worry, we’re perfect consumers, perfect worker bees, perfect cogs in the fascist-capitalist machine they’re trying to run.
So, you know what I think we should do? Put down the phone or iPad - or walk away from the computer - for just the next 2 minutes. Walk out our front or back doors. Stretch our arms wide. Look up at the sky. Take three deep breaths. Remind ourselves that we’re all connected. We’re all looking at the same sky. For just 2 minutes, we don’t have to worry. We got this. We can choose to disconnect from worry so that we can reconnect with joy and purpose. The harmful power structures will not win.
